1. Is there a rule of thumb on how many fish can occupy a garden pond?
The right fish stock depends on several factors. The size of the pond plays an important role, but the built-in filter technology and the fish species themselves are absolutely crucial. Furthermore, it must be taken into account that some of the fish will multiply very quickly and become larger.
2. What should be considered when it comes to parental controls?
A property owner must protect his property in such a way that other persons cannot be harmed as a result (duty to secure traffic).

This duty of care is violated if the property owner does not secure his garden pond in such a way that prohibits children from falling in. A visible boundary of the property is therefore not sufficient - there must be a physical boundary that protects children from unrestricted entry.

In general, ponds should be constructed with a shallow shore access in order to prevent a sudden fall. The pond owner is obliged to make security arrangements in a reasonable manner.

Both wire mesh fencing such as fishing nets over the pond as well as mounted steel mesh under the water surface can be taken into consideration as a security measure.
3. Are there journals on the subject of garden ponds?
Certainly there are also journals on the subject of garden ponds available in your country.

Water Features

1. How are water displays and accessories best maintained?
The necessary care is strongly dependent on the water hardness. The recommended hardness is <8.4 ° dH. In the case of harder water, limescale deposits can form on the surfaces and the technology, which at the same time means higher maintenance costs. We recommend the use of FIAP FOUNTAIN CLEAN for water displays in ornamental ponds (without animal and plant occupancy) in order to create the best water quality for your water display. FIAP PUMP CLEANSER is the first choice for stubborn limescale deposits on the water display pump. Optically refined surfaces, for example, brushed stainless steel or chrome-plated parts, should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. The pond water is to be kept as free as possible by small stones or dirt particles, which can block or damage the pump and pipes. Existing pre-filters should be checked occasionally and cleaned if necessary. Blocked nozzles can be blown out or cleaned with a fine wire. Before the frost, the water display is to be dismantled and dried, this offers the possibility of a complete cleaning including decalcification. Water pumps must be kept damp. There is no guarantee or guarantee claim for frost damage or damage caused by calcification.
2. How to clean limescale deposits on water displays?
The necessary care is strongly dependent on the water hardness. The recommended hardness is <8.4 ° dH. In the case of harder water, limescale deposits can form on the surfaces and the technology which at the same time means higher maintenance.
3. How does the water in ornamental ponds remain fresh as long as possible?
The full effect of every water display unfolds only with fresh, clear, water. Stagnated, polluted water not only smells unpleasant, it can permanently damage your water display or the pumping technique. FIAP FOUNTAIN CLEAN has therefore been developed for ornamental ponds without plant and animal occupancy. The special formula prevents the formation of biofilm and lime deposits on the surfaces. This way, an optimal water quality is created for your water display. The maintenance effort is minimized and the filling water remains fresh and crystal clear for as long as possible. Overdosing can lead to foam formation. In this case, the water filling quantity should be halved and replaced with fresh water.
4. Can the water display be operated with a filter or pond pump?
In general, the answer to this question is "yes"! However, it must be noted that filter pumps have to be in operation 24h per day so that the filter bacteria do not die off and the filter retains its full performance. In addition, most filter pumps would have to be throttled to a very high degree, since they generally promote considerably more water than the water display requires. The strong throttling can have a negative effect on the filter performance and the durability of the pump. For the reasons stated, it is always recommended to operate a water display (unless not included in the scope of delivery) with a pump adapted to it. Thus, the water display can be switched on and off as desired. For even greater comfort, we recommend the use of the remote control socket FIAP Control Active, so you can easily switch the water display from a distance.
5. Does the warranty also apply to LED rings?
LED rings are wear parts that do not fall under the warranty. However, they have a very long life and exchange is very rare.
6. Can LED lights be dimmed?
No dimming is possible with LED lamps, unless this is already integrated in the remote control.
7. What do the water displays look like in operation?
Just visit our Youtube Channel! At https://www.youtube.com/user/FIAPGmbH you will find manuals as well as demonstrational videos showing the products in action.
8. Are there different types of water displays?
In addition to water displays for the garden pond, FIAP also offers water displays for the terrace, the garden, and water displays for indoor use. No matter how and where you would like to surround yourself with water, FIAP offers you the perfect water display.
9. Are water displays frost-proof?
Please read the corresponding operating manuel and observe the instructions for use. Basically, our water games are to be taken out of service before the expected frost, completely emptied or cleaned and or in the dry over the winter.
10. Is it easy to keep fish in water display basins?
No! The conditions in a water display basin are not animal friendly. In order to be able to offer the fish species-appropriate housing conditions, it requires a certain volume of water, appropriate filtering and adapted feeding. These points are difficult or even impossible to achieve in water display basins. Fish should therefore only be kept in specially designed ponds.
11. Where can I get a new manual after loss?
All manuals can be downloaded as a PDF document under the required product.

Pumps

1. For what purpose do you need pumps in and around the pond?
Pond water is considered to be an artificial ornamental water, which can only develop a biological balance with technical support. The filter pump sometimes plays the most important role here. The pump transports the dirty pond water to the filter, in which the water is mechanically and biologically cleaned. The water then runs back into the pond (by a pumped system!). Furthermore, suitable pumps are needed to run streams and fountains in and around the pond.
2. Which pump suits which pond?
Choosing the right pump and accessories depends on many factors. Your FIAP dealer will work with you to develop the optimal solution for your individual requirements. In addition, you can find information on our website under Water Gardens - Pumps or Filter Systems. When choosing the right pump, not only the pond size is decisive but also the pump’s purpose.

  • Stream
  • Filter system
  • Fountains
  • Circulation
3. Which pump types are particularly suitable for filter systems?
As an all-rounder we recommend pumps from the Aqua Active series. Powerful, efficient, robust! They easily transport dirt particles up to 10 millimeters in diameter. Your FIAP partner will gladly advise you on the right pump for your pond or filter.
4. What are the differences between low-priced entry-level pumps and high-quality pond pumps such as the FIAP Aqua Active series?
Many pond owners are wondering about the differences between an entry level model and high quality pumps like the FIAP Aqua Active series. On the one hand, the FIAP Aqua Active series has a patented skimmer entrance. This means that with just one pump you can operate both a skimmer and a filter system at the same time. With conventional starter pumps, you can only operate the skimmer or just the filter (if they have a second pump inlet at all). FIAP Aqua Active pumps are also electronically adjustable, while cheap entry-level models usually have only synchronous motors which are not adjustable. Next is the structure of the pump housing. In this case, FIAP relies on a flow-optimized, large-area housing, which ensures perfect removal of dirt and is less clogged than conventional pump housings. Further advantages of the FIAP Aqua Active pumps are:

  • 3 year warranty
  • High performance
  • Energy-efficient engine technology
  • And many more benefits
At the heart of your pond technology, use only high-quality components such as the FIAP Aqua Active pump. Make no compromises.
5. Where should the pump be installed?
A pump should be installed at the lowest point opposite the filter inlet. This ensures optimal circulation and oxygenation of the pond water. Depending on the type of construction and the type of pond, another location may prove advantageous. In the case of a gravity design of the filter system, the pump is installed in the filter system or a separate pump chamber. If you are unsure about the optimal location for your pond pump, please contact your FIAP partner.
6. Which pumps are suitable for streams?
For streams, pumps of the Aqua Active or Aqua Active Profi series are primarily used. The pumps offer high performance, with low energy consumption and make no compromises. In addition, the motors of the pumps (up to 300 volt) can be controlled by means of a speed controller (FIAP Aqua Active Control). In this way, you can set the pump exactly to the required flow rate and also reduce energy consumption.
7. How can the performance of the pumps be changed?
Basically, the power of all pumps can be changed mechanically. With all FIAP Aqua Active pumps (up to 300 watts), the power can also be changed electronically by changing the speed using the speed controller (FIAP Aqua Active Control). The positive side effects are on the one hand the reduced energy consumption of the pump and the associated lower heat development. The pump motor undergoes no additional, unnecessary wear with this type of throttling.
8. Is power saved when using a speed controller?
The speed controller is a phase control. This also saves energy. However, the saving does not take place in a 1:1 ratio.

The speed controller also consumes a certain amount of energy. As a rough rule of thumb, you can expect energy savings of around 40% at a 50% power reduction.
9. Can pumps run dry?
No, pumps must not run dry! The pumped water also serves to cool and lubricate the pump rotor. Dry running inevitably leads to permanent damage to the shaft and storage. FIAP Aqua Active pumps have an integrated thermal protection switch. This means that the pump shuts off automatically as soon as it runs too warm. After cooling, the pump will automatically turn on again so that the filter is, for example, supplied with water again. As soon as the thermal protection switch intervenes, the pump should be removed and checked to avoid permanent damage.
10. Are solar pumps suitable for operating filter systems?
No. Solar pumps are not suitable for the operation of filter systems, since they cannot be operated in 24 - hour use. We recommend the use of our solar pumps for all decorative applications on the pond (such as water features or streams), which do not necessarily depend on a certain duration, as this cannot always be guaranteed depending on the weather.
11. What are the costs of using pumps?
The costs depend on the power consumption of a pump. Power consumption is expressed in watts for each pump. 1,000 watts per hour = 1 kilowatt hour
1 kilowatt hour of electricity costs about 20 to 25 euro cents (depending on the provider)

The following example is based on the Aqua Active 6,000 (65 watts), calculated for an entire pond season. It is assumed that the pump will be in use at the beginning of March and shut down at the end of November. The pump runs continuously. The electricity provider charges 20 cents for 1 kilowatt hour. Results:

65/1000 W x 24h x (9x30 days) x 0,20 Euro / kWh = 84,24 Euro

It is important not to choose a lower pump performance because of energy saving reasons! Many pond owners make this mistake and then rely on a weak pump. A difficult to maintain, non-functioning pond is often the result.
12. Can you use a pump to run a fountain and a water spout?
Yes, this is possible at any time thanks to a telescopic ascending tube with an integrated adjustable outlet. This is already included in the Aqua Active Mini SET and Aqua Active Plus product series. Fountains and water spouts can also be operated with the Aqua Active series.
13. Can Aqua Active pumps be used in a swimming pond?
The Aqua Active 12 V product series is specially designed for use in swimming ponds. According to VDE regulations, it is not permitted to use 230 volt pumps in swimming ponds. The pumps must be installed in a dry shaft below the water level with a minimum distance of 2 meters. Plastic pipes must be laid.
14. Are the pumps frost-proof?
Not all. A pump should be stored away from frost and wet. The plug must not be flooded. FIAP recommends cleaning the pumps thoroughly with a soft brush under running water, depending on the degree of soiling. For the professional cleaning of calcifications and other stubborn dirt we recommend the use of FIAP Aqua Active Cleanser. The pump should be rinsed thoroughly with water after cleaning.
15. How to connect filters and skimmers to an Aqua Active pump?
Our innovative, patented suction system makes it possible to aspirate with just one Aqua Active pump simultaneously via an external skimmer and the pump housing. The distribution of the suction power between skimmer and pump housing can be easily adjusted from 0 - 100%. The skimmer is connected via the skimmer inlet on the pump housing. The filter is connected via the pressure outlet on the pump housing. The matching stepped nozzles are already included. We recommend choosing the largest possible hose diameter for high flow rates and longer pumping distances.
16. Can the pump cable be shortened or the plug dismantled?
No. This will change the design of the pump. The pump no longer complies with the VDE guidelines. Any guarantee and warranty claim expires.
17. Can pumps also be operated with solar modules?
No. Only special solar pumps can be operated with solar modules. These pumps are operated with direct current DC (FIAP Aqua Active Solar pump series). 230 volt - pumps have alternating voltage.
18. How is the needed pumping height or circulation rate calculated?
With the pumping height, it should be noted that this is calculated from the water surface (even if the pump is placed at the bottom of the pond) up to the highest delivery point. The pond depth is not important. Using the pump diagram, you can now read the approximate flow rate at the pumping height. Pressure losses due to small cable cross-sections and long pumping distances must also be taken into account. The circulation rate of the pump must be fitted according to the type of pond. As a rough rule of thumb, the recommendation is to size the pump so that a natural pond or a biotope is completely circulated every 3-4 hours, a koi pond should be circulated 1 to 2 times per hour. With swimming ponds also lower circulation rates are sufficient. Circulating means that the complete pond volume is sent once through the filter system within the specified time. Your FIAP partner will be happy to advise you on choosing the right pumping capacity.
19. Where can I get a new operating manual in case of loss?
All operating instructions can be downloaded as a PDF document under the required product.

UV Lamps

1. What do you need a UV device for?
The use of UV devices (FIAP UVC Active, FIAP UVC Active Stainless Steel and FIAP UV Active) effectively combats algae and reduces pathogenic germs and bacteria. This consistently ensures clear and healthy water.
2. Do UV lamps actually help prevent algae infestation in ponds with strong solar radiation?
Yes, but only against floating algae that cloud the water - they do not help with filamentous algae. However, a UV lamp alone is of limited use, as it only clumps up the algae. It must be followed by a filter that filters out these clumps. The suitable filter can also be found in the FIAP product range or here on our website under Water Gardens - Filter Systems.
3. Using the UV clarifier, the pond water became clear and filamentous algae began to grow. What happened here?
This effect is nothing unusual. There is a fundamental distinction between floating and filamentous algae. Floating algae are microscopic algae cloud the water and turn it to a poisonous green shade. Filamentous algae, on the other hand, are, as the name implies, algae, which usually adhere to pond walls and other surfaces in the pond and have a thread-like shape. As soon as the UV clarifier has removed the floating algae and provided clear water, sunlight now reaches the pond for the first time, right to the bottom. Suddenly nutrients and light are available to the filamentous algae, which make them grow. Filamentous algae are most effectively removed with appropriate FIAP water treatment products and mechanical methods.
4. How long should the UV lamp run?
Some pond owners turn off the UV clarifier overnight with a timer to avoid electricity costs. This is in principle also possible, but a continuous operation over the pond season also has advantages. The permanent operation not only ensures that no algal blooms (green or turbid water) are formed again, nor are there fluctuations in the value of water.
5. Does the UV Active device have to be mounted on the filter?
No. The unit can also be mounted separately with hose connections in the bypass. It is advisable to use the UV Active device in places where the most pre-purified water is. This ensures that the UV rays can penetrate deeper into the water flowing through and thus increase the effectiveness. Therefore, the installation offers a mechanical pre-filter (for example FIAP SpaltActive) or at the very end of the filter chain.
6. My pond is not clear despite sufficiently sized UV power, what can be the cause?
First, it should be clarified whether the turbidity of the water is due to an algal bloom or sediments dissolved in the water. For example, fish roam through the sediment on the bottom of the pond and cause turbidity. However, the UV clarifier is only effective against turbidity due to floating algae. Another possible cause may be the use of a too weak pond pump. Although the UV clarifier was designed to be sufficiently large, the result is often unsatisfactory. Even unfavorable flow conditions in the pond can cause a lack of UV clarification. Therefore, check whether all areas of the pond are being circulated through properly.
7. How to evaluate the disinfecting effect of UV systems?
Here one speaks of a germ-reducing function. In order to achieve a complete sterilization, however, extremely high irradiation values are necessary, which are very unlikely to be used in the garden pond. However, even the UV clarifiers for the garden pond offer germ-reducing properties and thus ensure a sustainable, healthy pond climate. The use of a UV clarifier alone excludes general hygiene measures such as pond cleaning, adapted feeding, and regular water changes.
8. Why does a UV lamp have to be at least 2 meters from the pond? Could a shorter distance be harmful to the fish?
The specified distance to the pond refers to a regulation concerning the safety measures of electrical appliances in the vicinity of water. The manufacturer must inform the consumer. These are VDE regulations. The device can not harm the plants and animals.
9. When does the UVC lamp have to be changed?
The UVC lamp has a lifetime of approx. 9,000 operating hours. As a rule of thumb, we recommend replacing the bulb after each winter, as soon as the UV lamp is put back into operation. In this way it is ensured that an always sufficient irradiation intensity is guaranteed. In addition, you should clean the quartz glass. If the bulb is used for longer than recommended, it usually has only 50% of the original radiant power or even less. The only lasting effect is power consumption, despite optical function, no algae or germ reducing function takes place.
10. Moisture forms in the quartz glass of the UV lamp. Is my UV lamp defective?
This is condensation in a space. The electronics remain unaffected.
11. Where can I get a new operating manual after loss?
All operating instructions can be downloaded as a PDF document under the required product.

Filter Systems

1. Is a good circulation pump sufficient for a functioning garden pond?
No! The circulation of the pond does not lead to a permanently functioning garden pond. The problem is the accumulating sediments and certain chemical compounds that are not converted or degraded. Sooner or later, problems such as poor water quality or sick fish will occur.
2. Why is a filter system needed in a garden pond?
A good pond filter always consists of a mechanical and biological filter stage. In the first step, suspended solids and other solids are mechanically removed. In the biological filter stage, the water is then biologically purified by the microorganisms and filter bacteria settling there. The result is healthy, clear pond water. Keep in mind that a filter that has only one of the two filter levels, cannot work in the long run and problems are inevitable. The filter system is the heart of your pond system. Do not compromise and rely on sophisticated technology. That's the only way to enjoy your garden pond for a long time.
3. How do I choose the right filter system?
Choosing the right pond filter and accessories depends on many factors. Your FIAP dealer will work with you to develop the optimal solution for your individual requirements. In addition, you can find detailed information on our website under water gardens - filter systems to find a suitable pond filter. Decisive for choosing the right filter are, for example:
  • pond type such as goldfish pond, koi pond, swimming pond etc.
  • stocking amount
  • pond volume
  • structural conditions of the pond (especially for existing plants)
  • own initiative regarding filter care
4. Where can I find out about the suitable components for the filter system, such as a pond pump and UV device?
An overview of these components can be found, in our catalog "The World of Water Gardens". The proper sizing of the components also requires consideration of some factors – refer to question 3. Your FIAP Partner will be pleased to help you select the right filter technology.
5. Which connection cable does FIAP recommend?
Depending on the type and size, FIAP filters have different connection sizes. We recommend that the hose or the piping be executed at least in the respective connection size. The use of smaller wire cross-sections not only leads to reduced flow rates, but also to increased energy consumption. The maximum possible filter performance is thus not exhausted. Your FIAP partner will gladly assist you in the design of the optimum connection cable.
6. What must be considered when laying the waste water drain?
If your filter system has a waste water drain, it must have a gradient of 1.5 to 2.5%. The end must always be free. In addition, the dirt drain should not be longer than a maximum of 3 to 4 meters. The dirty water can be drained into the canal, a flowerbed or a hedge. Please follow the guidelines of your local community.
7. What is the difference between a pumped filter system and a gravity filter system?
As the name suggests, a pumped filtration system is fed directly with a pond pump. The pump is either directly in the pond, or a separate pumping chamber and promotes the water from there into the filter. The filter stands above the water level. A filter system which is installed as a gravity version, is located in a filter chamber next to the pond and is installed below the water level. The pond pump sits in one of the last filter chambers and brings the water directly back into the pond. The resulting height or pressure difference causes the water to automatically flow into the filter. Both installation variants have certain advantages and disadvantages. Your FIAP partner will gladly assist you in choosing the optimal filter concept for you.
8. What to do if there is a risk of frost? Is it possible to operate FIAP filter systems in winter?
All FIAP filter systems are not frost resistant. Observe the instructions in the respective operating instructions. A winter operation is possible with appropriate installation and certain precautions. Gladly your FIAP partner informs you about this topic.
9. What should you pay attention to in the winter with pump and filter technology?
Pumps and other frost-sensitive technology should be shut down, dismantled and stored in a frost-proof manner when frost sets in. In smaller waters, it is important that the warmer survival zone of the fish is not circulated. In larger waters, a small water exchange along the shore area helps to prevent freezing.
The pump should be thoroughly cleaned inside and out and stored frost-free in a container filled with water. Seals remain so damp and any dirt cannot harden during storage.
10. What should be considered in general during commissioning?
Only a well-retracted filter has good biodegradation performance. Only place fish in the garden pond as soon as the filter has stabilized. Depending on the temperature, this can take several weeks. To shorten the run-in time, we recommend the use of FIAP BACTOBOOSTER at start-up and after each cleaning.
11. How and when do you best clean filter media?
In a biological filter, so-called filter media are housed, on which the beneficial filter bacteria accumulate. The filter media can be very different, foams, natural rocks, plastic bodies, etc. In order to survive, the bacteria must be constantly supplied with oxygen-rich water. As soon as the filter media becomes too dirty, there is no sufficient flow of the filter bacteria. It is time to clean the filter. The filter life (time until the next cleaning) depends on the amount of dirt and the filter size. To clean the filter media as gently as possible while not damaging the bacteria too much, it is advisable to wash the filter media in a tub of pond water only roughly. Do not use warm or cold water or high pressure cleaners. The thin, brown coating on the filter media consists of the settled filter bacteria and is not to be confused with dirt, so a rough cleaning of the filter media is absolutely sufficient. A deep cleaning is even counterproductive.
12. Where can I get a new manual, for example after loss?
All operating instructions can be downloaded here as a PDF file under the required product.

Pond Skimmer

1. What is a pond skimmer and what is it used for?
A pond skimmer is a device or more specifically an apparatus with which the water surface of the pond is continuously suctioned and cleaned. In this way, the water surface remains clean and incoming dirt cannot sink to the ground and sediment. Even pollen and foam bubbles are no problem for a pond skimmer, your pond surface is always clean, the pond water is less stressed and the maintenance effort for your pond is considerably reduced.
2. Why are there different types of pond skimmers?
Depending on the size of the pond and local conditions, it may be necessary to use a particular type of pond skimmer. In order to meet all customer requirements, FIAP offers a comprehensive range of pond skimmers. From the hobby pond to the professional pond, from the small garden pond to the swimming pool with several thousand liters, FIAP pond skimmers can be applied. We are happy to help you choose the right pond skimmer.
3. What must be taken into account when installing a pond skimmer?
Depending on the type of pond skimmer, there are some things to consider during installation. However, the following tips are always valid for all pond skimmers:
  • Always install the pond skimmer facing the wind, so when the wind blows dirt onto the surface, the pond skimmer is already in the correct direction and will thus automatically reinforce the cleaning effect.
  • Adjust the pumping capacity or the minimum or maximum flow rate of the pond skimmer to ensure optimum function.
  • Pond skimmers with a filter basket must be emptied regularly (depending on the dirt). Pond skimmers without a filter basket usually do not require any maintenance (except visual inspection of the function).
  • In the winter, permanently installed pond skimmers have to be emptied completely in order to avoid frost damage (FIAP closure screen for pond skimmers).
  • Note the flow in the pond. The return into the pond producing a flow which is outside the draw-in area of the pond skimmer, its function can be negatively affected.
4. How many pond skimmers do I need for my pond?
The number of pond skimmers required for your project depends on several factors. In addition to the pond type, factors such as dirt, location and size of the pond play an important role. Your specialized dealer will be happy to advise you on the required FIAP pond skimmer technology. Use our convenient dealer search, we will gladly assist you in finding a FIAP partner.
5. The pond skimmer does not function as wished, what could be the cause?
First check whether the pond skimmer is correctly installed, see the "What must be taken into account when installing a pond skimmer?" or the operating manual of the pond skimmer. If the pond skimmer is equipped with a screen, check that it is seated properly.
6. Is a pond skimmer dangerous for animals?
In addition to safety for humans, animal protection plays an important role. In accordance with the guidelines of the FLL, the corresponding FIAP pond skimmers are therefore designed and conceived with the greatest possible animal protection. A perforated emergency overflow, as well as an emergency exit, allow and facilitate reptiles and amphibians who have strayed into the pond skimmer to come out of the pond skimmer with their own efforts. In spite of these safety precautions, it is self-evident for the nature-conscious owner of the pond to occasionally check the filter basket, and if there are animals in it, to help them from the pond skimmer.
7. How long should the pond skimmer be in operation?
As a rule, the dirt entry from the top takes place around the clock. No matter whether it is flower pollen, seeds, leaves, etc., the dirt entry is continuous. Therefore, during the pond season, it is recommended to operate the pond skimmer 24 hours a day. In order to save energy, it is, of course, possible to operate the pond skimmer by timer. In intermittent operation, it must, however, be expected that a part of the dirt sinks from the surface to the pond floor and thus the water becomes more stressed. Water turbidity and increased cleaning effort can be a result.
8. What is the difference between a "pumped pond skimmer" and a pond skimmer in the "gravity principle"
Basically each pond skimmer needs a pump. For smaller ponds there are, for example, the FIAP PondSkim Active, which already has an integrated pump. The difference between a "pumped" and a pond skimmer in the "gravity principle" lies in the position of the pump in the system. In the pumped version, the pump is installed either directly in the pond skimmer (FIAP PondSkim Active) or directly from the pond skimmer. A pond skimmer in a gravity installation is usually connected directly to a filter system. The pump often sits in the last filter chamber or a separate pump chamber. The premium models FIAP SpaltSkim Active offer maximum flexibility and can be pumped as well as gravity-operated.
9. How is the pond skimmer best prepared for winter?
If it is possible, the pond skimmer should be removed from the pond in case of frost. Permanently installed pond skimmers must be completely emptied when there is a risk of frost. The FIAP sealing cover facilitates the waterproof sealing of the pond skimmer for the corresponding models. A complete emptying is therefore possible without any problems, without having to lower the water level in the pond. If a pump is integrated in the pond skimmer, apply the same care instructions as for FIAP pond pumps. Further information on the winter preparation can be found in the operating manual of the respective pond skimmers. Frost damage is excluded from any warranty and warranty claims.
10. Are there accessories available for the pond skimmer?
Yes. Ask your FIAP partner about pond skimmer accessories. Since all pond skimmers are constructed differently, accessories will not be available for every model. For the FIAP SpaltSkim Active, we offer a sealing cover and a decorative cover for a more elegant look.

Aeration

1. At what temperatures may FIAP Air Active pumps be operated?
The operating temperature of the FIAP Air Active pumps ranges from + 3 ° C to + 40 ° C.
2. Can FIAP Air Active air pumps be installed below the water level?
Yes. When the supplied check valves are integrated into the tubing. If the check valves are not mounted, water is sucked back into the pump even if it is switched off for a short time. This not only leads to the destruction of the pump, but in the worst case to an emptying of the basin.
3. The Air Active accessory allows uneven air to escape during the initial startup. Why is that?
Leave the aerator stones, aerator balls or aerator plates in the water for 10 minutes before putting them into operation so that the air vents can be wetted or saturated with water. Only then switch on the aerator pump.
4. In which water depth is the air intake optimal?
The optimum installation depth of the FIAP Air Active aerator stones, aerator balls and aerator plates is 0.4 to 1 meter depending on the pump type. The FIAP Air Active air vents should be installed in the pond or by the pond’s edge with a depth of at least 30 centimeters.
5. Does strong aeration push out CO² and increase the PH value?
This well-known phenomenon also occurs to a very small extent in the pond. Unlike tropical ornamental fish, a pH of 7.0 to 8.5 should be aimed for. A slight increase is thus desirable. At pH values of 8.0, under-saturation occurs, causing the water to accumulate on its own with CO² in the air. The aerator is therefore harmless.
6. How many air vents can be operated with a FIAP Air Active aerator pump?
The number of aerator stones, aerator balls or aerator plates does not matter and can be varied as desired, provided that the aerator pump promotes sufficient air.
7. The aerator’s bubble formation is uneven and cannot be restored by cleaning. What is the problem?
The Air Active vents are subject to natural wear. Depending on the care and water condition, the vents may sooner or later become contaminated with dirt particles. If cleaning does not improve the appearance of the bubbles, replacement of the vent is recommended.
8. There is hardly any air rising from the air vents. Why is that?
Please check the installation depth of the air vents and make sure that the air hoses were installed kink-free. The installation depth should be between 0.4 and 1 meter. If the installation depth and the air duct are correct, there may be a defect in the vent or air pump.
9. Which aerator pump may be used with FIAP air vents?
The aerator pump should be able to deliver between 60 and 3,000 liters of air per hour. The pressure must not exceed 0.4 bar. The pump should also have a 4 to 6 mm connection or be operated with a FIAP Air Active distributor.
10. Why is an aerator in the pond important?
An aerator ensures for oxygen input and promotes the discharge of harmful gases. The proper gas level of the pond is thus kept in balance. Furthermore, the aerator promotes the mixing of the water and ensures additional circulation in the pond. Note, however, that the flow generated by the filter circuit will not be adversely affected by the aerator.

Water Care

1. How does an algae problem occur?
First of all, it has to be clarified whether one speaks of natural algae occurrence or an actual algae problem. Many pond owners already feel bothered due to the natural algae grass or biofilm on pond walls and stones or by a few filamentous algae and call this an algae problem. It should not be forgotten that algae occurs in almost every natural body of water. However, if there is an extreme imbalance in the pond between algae and other pond plants, as well as a significant excess of nutrients, an algae problem can occur relatively quickly. A problem in this case means green water with 0 visibility, as well as large amounts of slimy or filamentous algae. Consequently, algae problems result from a biological imbalance in the pond or from an excess of nutrients.
2. How can one protect oneself from or fight against increased algal infestation?
Strong algae can have many causes. For example, too high a nutrient supply due to overfeeding or dead plant parts. Other causes include unfavorable water values, an unfavorable pond location (too much sun) or an oversupply of fish. Simply contact a local FIAP dealer. We will gladly recommend a suitable FIAP filter system or advise you on using the appropriate FIAP premiumcare water care product.
3. Are FIAP water care products harmful to animals, plants or stones?
FIAP water treatment is basically designed to be well tolerated by the animals, the plants and the other materials in the pond. Please observe the corresponding operating instructions and usage instructions for the individual products. Your FIAP dealer is happy to advise you.
4. FIAP water treatment is basically designed to be well tolerated by the animals, the plants and the other materials in the pond. Please observe the corresponding operating instructions and usage instructions for the individual products. Your FIAP dealer is happy to advise you.
The most natural remedy is the pond planting. It should be noted, however, that as a rough guideline, 1/3 of the total pond area must be planted in order to compete fairly well with the algae. Artificially created garden ponds quickly become unbalanced because of the high stocking densities of fish and the introduced fish food, which heavily pollutes the water with nutrients. To use plants as the only means against increased algal infestation, therefore, is usually not the only solution. However, this does not mean that plants do not provide meaningful support for the reduction of algae production.
5. What is meant by the so-called "New Pond Syndrome"?
Many pond owners are surprised after the new pond construction and its commissioning. The reason for this is an inexplicable turbidity of the water. This can vary from milky white to green and is related to various factors. The main reason for this is the not yet started or established pond biology. However, as soon as the biofilm as well as the filter bacteria have formed on the surfaces, the water values stabilize and the optical water quality becomes noticeably better. This process may take several weeks, it is important here to keep calm and give the pond the required break-in period. Only put in fish as soon as the pond has stabilized. With appropriate FIAP water care products, the break-in period and formation of the biological balance can be significantly accelerated.
6. How is the filter starter FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER introduced?
You can either place FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER directly on the filter media in the filter or mix it with pond water beforehand and then apply the emulsion to the filter media. Make sure that the UV clarifier remains off immediately after adding the bacteria for at least 24 hours.
7. How much FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER is needed?
We recommend the addition of 50ml FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER per 1,000 liters pond volume. The product cannot be overdosed! A higher dosage leads to a faster break-in time of the filter. Regular addition of FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER offers the best conditions for optimal filter biology.
8. Should FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER be reused every year?
The number and activity of bacteria in the pond or filter is subject to natural fluctuations. So the activity during the cold months compared to the activity in the summer, are clearly limited. In order to make the biological equilibrium faster in the spring, we recommend the addition of FIAP premiumcare BACTOBOOSTER, especially in spring, as soon as the water begins to warm. The addition of filter bacteria from a water temperature of about 10 degrees accelerates the break-in period enormously, thus ensuring a healthy pond environment.
9. Is it possible to do without a filter system by using FIAP premiumcare water care products?
No! A mechanical or biological water treatment can be done in most ponds only by means of the right pond filter system. The use of FIAP premiumcare water care products supports the filter system or the pond in its self-cleaning function and thus simplifies the necessary care work. On top of that, the FIAP water treatment gives your pond the perfect finish, enjoy crystal-clear, fresh water with a clear view down to the ground.
10. How can I test the water quality at home?
FIAP offers the right products for your test purposes. In addition to electronic measuring instruments for the most important water parameters, FIAP also offers rod and drop tests for fast, uncomplicated determination of the most common water parameters. Easy-to-understand instructions and brief explanations of the water parameters can be found in the instructions for use of the products.

Pond Care

1. Why do garden ponds need to be maintained and cleaned?
On the one hand, polluted garden ponds are very unsightly and on the other, ponds are permanently silted unless they are cared for. The accumulating dirt settles on the pond bottom and decomposition processes can occur which negatively influence the optical and chemical water quality. Green water and filamentous algae are often the consequence. In the worst case, the pond can even overturn, making survival of the pond inhabitants impossible.
2. What dirt needs to be reckoned with?
Depending on which type of pond it is and what the pond environment looks like, different types and amounts of dirt accumulate. For example, deciduous trees close to the pond can cause a significant amount of contamination. Particularly in autumn and over the winter, problems can occur due to the foliage if not removed. Another crucial factor is the type of pond and the stocking. In a swimming pond, for example, significantly less dirt accumulates than in a heavily occupied koi pond. Even the entry of pollen and grasses leads quickly to an unclean appearance and a nutrient surplus. From the above points, it is advisable to clean the pond regularly and to take appropriate precautions so that dirt cannot accumulate in the pond.
3. When do you best clean the pond?
We recommend a basic pond cleaning at the beginning of the season, during the pond season and shortly before the end of the pond season. This way, no large amounts of dirt can accumulate on the pond bottom and negatively affect the water quality. Maintaining and cleaning the pond regularly results in shorter cleaning times.
4. What work is involved by a pond cleaning?
The pond is divided into different zones, which require appropriate care. For example, you can remove floating leaves on the surface with the appropriate FIAP landing net. Remove accumulated mulch around the edge area as well as on the pond bottom with a FIAP pond vacuum cleaner. The FIAP PondBrush Active is ideal for cleaning stones and the pond liner. No matter what part of the pond cleaning, FIAP offers you the perfect cleaning accessories.
5. Which measures reduce the amount of dirt?
The pond location or pond environment is a very important factor. We recommend a sheltered location with as few foliage-bearing vegetation near the pond as possible. You can significantly reduce dirt entry and the associated maintenance efforts due to the right choice of location. Technical measures such as an integrated pond skimmer (more information under FAQ pond skimmer) not only ensure an always-clean water surface, they also reliably prevent the dirt from ever reaching the pond bottom. This belongs to the basic equipment of a well-maintained, functioning pond. Nevertheless, if deciduous trees are close to the pond, a FIAP pond net, especially in autumn, offers effective protection against falling foliage.
6. Is pond cleaning with water care products useful?
Manual pond cleaning is a prerequisite for a well-maintained, biologically functioning pond. In order to get the most out of the optical and biological water quality of your pond, FIAP water care offers the right products. For the reduction and prevention of floating and filamentous algae, reduction of sediments and the promotion of the biological self-cleaning power of your pond complete the product range. Give your pond the perfect finishing touch with the right water treatment from FIAP.
7. My pond was not maintained for many years, what is the best way to proceed?
Many ponds are planned or built incorrectly and are therefore hard to maintain. If the pond does not receive the proper care, it will silt up over the years. However, some pond owners want a clean, working pond back. In most cases, a complete restart is recommended here, which means that the pond must first be completely emptied and then it has to be decided whether and in what way technical modifications to the pond have to be made in order to reduce the maintenance effort in the future. It is best to contact a gardening and landscaping company in your area, we are happy to assist you in finding a competent contact person.
8. What is a floor drain and what does gravity system mean?
More and more pond owners decide to build their new ponds with floor drain and gravity system. This means that the filtration system will not be set up above the pond water level as usual (pumped system), but in a separate filter chamber next to the pond, below the water level. The advantages here are obvious, the filter is fed via one or more floor drains. The dirt is sucked directly from the lowest point in the pond and effectively transported to the filter. Energy-saving pumps can be used in the filter itself, since the water hardly needs to be pumped above altitude and can even be returned below the water surface. Reduced energy costs, invisible filter technology, optimal dirt removal and thus reduced maintenance effort, all these points clearly speak for a filter system in gravity design.
9. Which water is suitable for cleaning?
When cleaning your pond, add a certain amount of fresh water to the pond. It is sometimes important to pay attention to which water is used. Thus, well water, but also the tap water of the local water supplier, may already be preloaded with nutrients (for example, nitrate). Increased algae growth can be the result, therefore it is generally advisable to know the water values of the supplied fresh water. To ensure certainty, the common water parameters can be determined quickly and easily with the appropriate FIAP water tests.
10. A blanket of algae is forming on the pond walls, is this dangerous?
No, on the contrary, in the mentioned algae lawn or biofilm on pond walls and surfaces, a multitude of useful microorganisms settle, which stabilize the water quality. Often, fish and other pond inhabitants can be seen as they munt in the blanket of algae looking for food. If the flooring is not an aesthetic problem for the pond owner, this is useful and is part of a functioning pond system.

Lighting Technology

1. What advantages does lighting technology offer in and around the pond?
In addition to the practical use, the illumination of certain parts of the garden offers an aesthetic benefit which is for most garden or pond owners the most important aspect. Whether a subtle lighting accent set by a spotlight, or larger lighting, FIAP lighting technology offers the right products for your lighting needs.
2. How flexible is FIAP lighting technology?
In the development of our products in the lighting technology area, flexibility was a very important factor. For example, it is possible to operate several spotlights (even different types) with only one central and sufficiently strong transformer. Even the cables can be extended to the required lengths. FIAP also offers radio controlled sockets, as well as dimmer switches so that no wishes remain unfulfilled. Whether above or below water (note the degree of protection!), FIAP lighting technology includes premium quality products made with perfect workmanship. Let your imagination run wild and create your own personal lighting setup together with FIAP.
3. Are the transformers waterproof?
Only products with protection class IP 68 may be permanently submerged in water. Always read the operating instructions carefully or check the protection class on the product itself. For both transformers and spotlights, you will find the protection classes separately on each component. This will tell you if the product can be submerged in water or not.
4. How best to mount FIAP lighting technology?
FIAP lighting technology is flexible to install. Some spotlights can be perfectly attached to the desired location by means of a ground spike or wall mount. However, the optimal assembly must be considered and selected individually for each application. FIAP lighting technology is developed and designed so that the widest possible range of use is possible.
5. How bright are products from FIAP lighting technology?
The luminous intensity of the spotlights or rather the lights are different. Some lighting applications have a pleasant, subtle illumination. By the illumination of large objects such as trees, etc., a more powerful spotlight is required. This too can be perfectly realized with our FIAP lighting technology. We are happy to help you find the right FIAP product for your lighting needs.
6. How expensive is the operation of lighting technology?
Thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology, operating and electricity costs have been reduced to a minimum. The economical bulbs consume in comparison to conventional bulbs a fraction of electricity and are therefore particularly inexpensive to operate.
7. Is the use of lighting technology in the garden pond dangerous?
The output voltage of the transformers is 12V. A use of lighting technology in the garden or swimming pond is therefore unproblematic. In any case, observe the safety instructions and the conditions of use of the respective product.
8. Are there different colors for the individual spotlights?
Some spotlights come with different color attachments. Others are easy to adjust by remote control, so the lights can be perfectly adjusted to the desired mood. We are happy to inform you whether the desired product has a color change function or not.
9. Are lights from FIAP lighting technology to be operated on a timer?
The operation on a timer is easily possible. Some lights from the FIAP lighting technology series even have a memory function. This means that the color set by the remote control remains activated even after the power is turned off (for example, by the timer). So you can be sure that your garden always shines in the desired color. You are welcome to contact us for more information.
10. Can I install and disguise the lights?
If you are dealing with an integrated light, installation is easily possible. Although the LED bulbs form a significantly lower heat development, we recommend under no circumstances to cover or install the lights, unless this is expressly permitted in the operating instructions.

Pond Construction

1. Where can I get information about pond planning and pond construction?
You will find useful information about pond construction here in our FAQ's, on our website and in our catalog. Also, our pond mascot Pondolino® reveals tips on this topic. It goes without saying that your FIAP partner, whether for specialized trade or gardening and landscaping, will be there to help and advise you. We are happy to assist you in finding a suitable contact person.
2. What do I need for the pond?
Useful tips and suggestions on garden ponds can be found in our catalog "The World of Water Gardens" or here on our website. Our pond mascot Pondolino®, with tips & tricks, is also at your side. The basic equipment of each pond includes the sealing (FIAP PVC Active Foil), a suitable filter system, as well as pond technology such as filter and aeration pumps. Your FIAP partner will gladly advise you on the right technology for your planned project.
3. How to calculate the pond contents, for example, the design of the filter technology?
First of all, the volume has to be roughly determined. Here you simply use the formula L x W X H (length times width times height). Depending on the proportion of shallow water zones, be sure to subtract approximately a third to half of the results. By doing so, you get an everyday value to select the necessary pump or the optimal filter. If you are unsure, the pond volume should always be a little larger than calculated. Filter technology with a residual capacity is more preferable than smaller-sized technology. In any case, the use of a water meter is recommended before the first filling. This way, you can accurately determine the pond volume by the liter, which has its benefits. Water care products and medicines can be dosed precisely and develop the desired effect.
4. What factors should be considered when choosing the pond environment?
The choice of location should be determined so that the pond is not exposed to the sun all day long (this promotes excessive algae growth in the summer). Perfectly suitable is a half-shady and semi-sunny location. Note that vegetation near the pond can have a significant impact on the entry of dirt. Plants that only need to be cut in the fall are much easier to care for than plants that lose their foliage. The foliage could fall into the pond. For fish stocking, the water depth should be at least 80 cm (at least 120 cm for koi carp). When considering the ratio of water surface to the depth, a slope angle of approximately 30 degrees should be taken into account. Lay the embankment in a terraced manner and pay attention to the areas for plant baskets. For the perfect location, it is important to also take factors such as noise, proximity to the living area, etc., into consideration. For a complete consultation, contact your FIAP partner.
5. Which pump suits which pond?
Choosing the right pump and accessories depends on many factors. Your FIAP partner will work with you to develop the optimal solution for your individual requirements. In addition, you can inform yourself on our website. When choosing the right pump, not only the size of the pond is decisive, the following factor should be taken into account: What should the pump be used for?

  • Stream
  • Filter system
  • Fountains
  • Circulation
The selection of the right pump is crucial for an optimal pond function. If you save money in the wrong place, you run the risk of always having problems with the pond. These problems are expressed in poor water quality, high care and sick fish.
6. Which hose diameter and which hose length are optimal?
The diameter and hose length cannot be generalized. Depending on the application, different hose diameters may be required. In general, large hose diameters allow the promotion of large amounts of water with less friction loss. For small waterspouts, smaller hose diameters are more suitable. For longer distances in filter chains or large streams, hose diameters of 40 mm or larger are recommended. Your FIAP partner will gladly assist you in choosing the right hose diameter. There is basically no direct limit to the hose length. The friction loss is related to the hose length. As the hose length increases, the hose diameter should also be increased and the pump performance adjusted.
7. Which hoses are recommended?
Our pond mascot Pondolino® recommends plastic spiral hoses. The premium quality of FIAP SpiralTube Active stands for maximum robustness and longevity. The cross-manufacturer quality differences, especially in the area pond hoses are sometimes serious! Make no compromises and rely on quality with this important component!
8. How high may a fountain be?
A fountain should not be higher than the radius of the pond. This ensures that the loss of water, even in windy conditions, is limited.
9. How much water evaporates per day in a pond?
Unfortunately, no clear information can be given. Evaporation depends on many factors. The position of the pond, the sun and wind significantly influence evaporation. In addition, a stream or fountain also promotes water evaporation.
10. Unfortunately, my question about pond construction was not answered, where can I find help?
Depending on the desired type of pond, the pond construction process is extremely extensive. Starting with the planning, the available materials, the implementation of a variety of questions, which unfortunately cannot all be answered at once. Many pond owners have had to rebuild their pond 2 - 3x in order to achieve the desired result. When this happens, money and time is unnecessarily invested. Too much initiative, saving incorrectly, as well as poor planning are often the reasons for this. Our recommendation for you: From the beginning you should rely on an expert’s competence and work out the perfect pond concept together with your FIAP partner. He will be happy to tell you what work you can do yourself to keep costs down. The initial investment is higher in this case, follow-up costs are significantly reduced and you get the, even in the long run, functioning pond you have also wished!

When using metal parts, make sure that it is stainless steel that does not rust in the water.
9. How do I get the pond decoration out of the pond?
If it is floating, non-mounted product, they can easily be fished out of the pond by using a fishing net. FIAP DipNet Active is ideal for this purpose. If it concerns heavier decoration articles, we recommend to lift these by hand from the pond.
10. Should pond decorations also be attached to the shore?
We recommend that you attach heavy decorative items (such as stone) if it is in any way possible. If you do so, the possibility of the pond decoration falling into the pond and damaging the foil is reduced.

Feeding

1. Should fish be fed all year round?
Fish are cold-blooded animals, this means with decreasing water temperatures, the fish’s metabolism will slow down and the food requirement also decreases. This applies to water with temperatures at and below + 12 ° C.
2. Can fish food cloud the water?
Yes, many different varieties of feed cloud the pond water. However, high-quality feeds such as the FIAP premiumactive feed does not cloud the water. The decisive factor is that the fish are not fed more than what they are able to process. The excess food becomes additional nutrients for the algae.
3. How often and how much do I feed?
Feed sparingly! Watching the many fish during the daily feeding is always a nice spectacle. Even if it is difficult, feed sparingly and only as much as the fish can process within a few minutes. These portions are more easily digestible for your fish, and you avoid overfeeding. Excess feed decomposes in the water and affects its quality. If you feed at the same time and in the same place every day, the fish will soon be eating from your hand. The daily feeding is also a good opportunity to observe the fish.
4. Why is the FIAP Belt Feeder also perfect as a pond feeder?
Automated feeding does not just offer benefits. Fish food is often left exposed in large containers over a longer period with humidity and high temperatures, this reduces the quality of the feed. Even technical defects and malfunctions cannot be ruled out, so a feeder, unnoticed, can feed too much, too little or even nothing in the event of a malfunction. The next point is that many feeders available on the market only have a limited programming function, which allows only a small number of feedings per day. The FIAP Belt Feeder is the right answer for all of these problems. The food remains in the feeder for a maximum of 24 hours, so fresh food of the highest quality can be constantly offered. The filling is accompanied by a daily function control (which should generally be done for pond technology), thus a possible malfunction can be detected early and quickly rectified. The continuous feeding over 12h or 24h also ensures optimal feed intake and growth of your fish. As an automatic pond feeder, the FIAP Belt Feeder offers many more advantages. Your FIAP partner can inform you more about this item, and you will also find a lot of information about the FIAP Belt Feeder on our website.
5. What should I feed with a stock of mixed fish in the pond?
We recommend FIAP premiumactive PONDMIX and FIAP premiumactive ALL IN ONE! These two types of feed are ideal for ponds with mixed fish stock. FIAP premiumactive PONDMIX consists of different types of flakes, pond sticks, dried crayfishes and various granules. FIAP premiumactive ALL IN ONE consists of three different colored granules, red for colorful splendor, green for health and brown for a healthy metabolism of pond fish. Both types of feed can be easily fed from about + 10 ° C.
6. What and how do I feed my pond fish in the spring?
If you are feeding at cold water temperatures from approximately + 5 ° C then we recommend the FIAP premiumactive BASIC. If you are feeding at a water temperature of approximately + 10 ° C to + 12 ° C, depending on the fish stock, we recommend the FIAP premiumactive PONDMIX, FIAP premiumactive ALL IN ONE, or the FIAP premium active PROFESSIONAL. These feeds contain nutrients that fish can process even at these temperatures. The FIAP premiumactive BASIC is the first food after the winter and the last food before the winter.
7. How do I feed my pond fish in summer?
As the temperature increases, so does the appetite of the fish! Feed only high quality food such as FIAP premiumactive PROFESSIONAL, it contains necessary vitamins and probiotics. For specie appropriate nutrition such as sturgeons, we recommend the high quality, fast sinking FIAP premiumactive STURGEON feed.
8. How do I feed my pond fish in autumn?
As a preparation for the winter, it is best to feed only high-quality food such as FIAP premiumactive PROFESSIONAL and FIAP premiumactive BASIC. This reduces unnecessary water pollution and ensures good conditioning of pond fish. In autumn, the correct feeding is absolutely crucial, especially in relation to the wintering of the fish and the required energy reserves in the spring.
9. How do I feed my pond fish in winter?
FIAP premiumactive BASIC was specially developed for the cool temperatures of spring and autumn. The high-quality combination of floating and sinking feed ingredients ensures optimal food intake of all fish. Both cautious fish in deeper zones and more active fish on the surface are offered feed at the same time. The special feed composition makes FIAP premiumactive BASIC particularly easy to digest, so it can be fed from about + 5 ° C. Below + 5 ° C the feeding should be stopped!
10. What is the quality like in the airtight plastic packaging?
Not all feeds are created equal! Avoid buying cheap feed from non-airtight packaging. Vital nutrients, such as vitamins are destroyed quickly and thus the lasting health of your fish is not guaranteed. High-quality feeds such as the FIAP premiumactive feed are sealed in airtight packaging with a seal of protection and a best-before date. Cheap food is poorly digested and will additionally enrich the pond water with excess nutrients. Therefore, feed with inferior quality will promote the growth of algae in your pond.

Pond Heating

1. Why is it important to heat the pond?
The heating of the pond is important in order to offer the best possible wintering opportunities for the pond inhabitants. Unheated ponds quickly become a danger to the animals living in them, often dying painfully during the cold season. Therefore, FIAP offers the right pond heating product for every pond size.
2. Are there any differences in the heating?
Yes! It is important to make a clear distinction between equipment designed solely to keep a small area of the pond ice free and equipment designed to heat the entire pond volume to a certain temperature. The main differences are the achieved temperature level, and the associated energy consumption (electricity costs). Freezing preventers are therefore very energy efficient, whereas pond heaters have a higher energy consumption.
3. What advantages does a pond heater offer over a freeze preventer?
Fish are poikilothermic, which means they adapt their metabolism as far as possible to the water temperature. Due to the size of some ponds, so-called "elevator temperatures" predominate in the pond, especially in spring. This means that the water temperature changes in a relatively short time in large jumps. For the fish, weakened by the winter anyway, is a hard struggle to adapt their own metabolism to the fluctuating temperatures, which often leads to diseases, parasitic problems and even death. A pond heater helps here! It is possible with a heater to counteract the temperature fluctuations and to ensure in the spring for a constant temperature level, at least until the pond gets warmer due to the weather conditions. This is not possible with a freeze preventer.
4. What is the purpose of a freeze preventer?
As the name already suggests – a freeze preventer will allow a small part of the pond to stay thawed. This allows the necessary gas exchange to take place in winter. Many pond owners believe that their pond inhabitants freeze over the winter. Often, however, the animals suffocate, due to a closed ice cover. The biological activity in the pond is only reduced in winter, but it still takes place. This means that digested gases can accumulate in the sediment, which collect under a closed ice cover. The last remaining oxygen in the water is consumed by the biological processes and the pond inhabitants. At the same time, noxious gases are accumulated which inevitably leads to suffocation. A freeze preventer from FIAP can help! Through the hole, the noxious gases escape and oxygen passes through and into the water.
5. What are the advantages of having a freeze preventer compared to a pond heater?
Freeze preventers are quick and easy to install in the pond. The acquisition costs and the maintenance costs are much lower compared to pond heaters. A freeze preventer from FIAP is standard equipment for every garden pond with pond inhabitants. Create the best possible survival conditions for your pond inhabitants, even during the cold season!
6. What does "frost guard function" mean?
The FIAP PondHeat Active freeze preventer has a so-called frost guard function. If this is switched on, then the freeze preventer only heats up during frost. This way it is the most efficient and cost-effective operation possible. This also protects the environment.
7. Is pond heating only recommended in winter or also in summer?
Even in summer a pond heating makes sense! A large number of all ponds fail to maintain a temperature of 20 degrees or more in the summer for longer periods of time. In this temperature range, the metabolism of the fish is at its peak, good water values and species-appropriate feeding, promotes the well-being and growth of the fish. It is also important to prepare the fish for the upcoming winter, they need to build up the optimal reserves, from which they consume in the winter. For the reasons mentioned, a heating of the pond even during the warmer season is absolutely worth considering. Use your FIAP pond heater successfully at any time of the year and thus offer your pond habitants optimal living conditions!
8. Are there different freeze prevention techniques?
Yes, there are different techniques. Freeze preventers use heating elements to prevent freezing (FIAP PondHeat Active), or we also offer aerator pumps with styrofoam floating bodies (FIAP Ice Active SET). The styrofoam floating body ensures optimum insulation to the outside, while the air vents under it move warmer water from the deeper parts of the pond up to the surface. Both techniques have proven themselves over time and reliably keep part of the surface ice free.
9. Is a visual inspection in winter useful?
Definitely! All FIAP pond heaters are subject to high quality controls to ensure reliable operation. As with all technical or electrical devices, in some cases there may interference. A regular visual inspection, even in winter, is therefore highly recommended. A quick glance to see if there is an ice free spot in the pond. With a little luck, even the pond inhabitants can be observed under the ice cover in their hibernation. Be sure to behave quietly near the pond, as vibrations disturb the pond inhabitants during their winter hibernation. The inhabitants unnecessarily consume energy reserves if this happens.
10. What should be considered for a pond cover?
A pond cover offers some advantages. The energy costs for pond heating can be significantly reduced and the maximum temperature reached can be increased. Pond coverage can also be risky. It is important to make sure that a little air circulates through the pond cover so that the necessary gas exchange can take place here as well. Another important point is the possibility of visual inspection through the cover. It should be avoided that the pond cover is covered by an additional layer of snow.

Accessories

1. Which products can be found in the accessories section?
In the accessories section you will find products for a wide variety of applications. In addition to decorative products, here we also offer functional products. For example, defense against herons for your pond. It's best to browse through or visit our Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/FIAPGmbH.
2. How are water displays and accessories best maintained?
The necessary care is strongly dependent on the water hardness. The recommended hardness is <8.4 ° dH. In the case of harder water, limescale deposits can form on the surfaces and the technology, which at the same time means higher maintenance. The pond water is to be kept as free as possible of small stones or dirt particles, which can block or damage the pump and pipes.
3. How expensive is the operation of lighting technology?
Most FIAP lighting products have LED bulbs. Thanks to state-of-the-art LED technology, operating and electricity costs have been reduced to a minimum. The economical bulbs consume in comparison to conventional bulbs use a fraction of electricity and are therefore particularly inexpensive to operate.
4. What needs to be taken into consideration when there is wind?
If you wish to place decorations in your garden, make sure that they are adequately secured and cannot be knocked over or blown away by the wind. When it comes to products displayed in the water, the wind is also to be considered. The water image is influenced by wind and can lead to a distraction of the water jet. Therefore, we recommend choosing wind-protected areas for items like this!
5. What to do if there is a risk of frost? Are there any possibilities to keep these products out in the winter anyway?
The products are not frost-proof. Please observe the corresponding operating instructions as well as the care instructions of the respective product. The approaching winter is the perfect opportunity to clean the products, if necessary, to replace wear parts and then store them carefully.
